Bali has more nonstop origins than any island in Southeast Asia, but none of them are in the Americas or Europe — every trip from the West is a one-stop through an Asian or Gulf hub. That single connection, and picking the right coast for the season, are most of what there is to get right.

How the secret got out

Eat Pray Love (2010) made it a pilgrimage; Instagram made it a backdrop; the airport's nonstop map filled in from Australia, China and the Gulf. Six million foreign visitors a year by 2024 on an island of four million.

Getting to Bali in practice

Denpasar (DPS) has nonstops from across Asia and Australia — Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, Doha, and every Australian capital. From the US West Coast the fastest routings are one stop through Taipei, Seoul, or Singapore (20–24 hours door to door); from Europe, one stop through Doha, Singapore, or Istanbul. There is no way to avoid the connection, so pick a hub whose onward flight lands in daylight — the airport taxi negotiation is easier before dark.

When to go

The dry season runs May through September and is also the peak; April and October carry the same weather with fewer people. The rainy season (November–March) means afternoon downpours, not washed-out days — and the island is greenest then. One date to check before booking: Nyepi, the Balinese day of silence in March, when the entire island — airport included — shuts down for 24 hours.

Where to stay

Canggu is the surf-and-laptop coast, Ubud the inland rice-terrace and yoga capital, Uluwatu the clifftop surf peninsula, and Sanur and Nusa Dua the calm-water family resorts. If the crowds are why you hesitated, stay in Sidemen or Munduk — terraced valleys an hour from anywhere famous that look like the Bali of thirty years ago.

Worth knowing

Most nationalities get a visa on arrival, extendable once, and Bali charges a small tourist levy on entry. Scooters cause most tourist injuries; a car with driver runs about $40–50 a day and turns transit into sightseeing. Tap water is a no everywhere.

Background

Bali is an Indonesian island and province and the westernmost of the Lesser Sunda Islands. East of Java and west of Lombok, the province includes the island of Bali and a few smaller offshore islands, notably Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan to the southeast. The provincial capital, Denpasar, is the most populous city in the Lesser Sunda Islands and the second-largest, after Makassar, in Eastern Indonesia. The Denpasar metropolitan area is the extended metropolitan area around Denpasar. The upland town of Ubud in Greater Denpasar is considered as Bali's cultural centre. The province is Indonesia's main tourist destination, with a significant rise in tourism since the 1980s, and has become the country's area of overtourism. Tourism-related business makes up 80% of the Bali economy.
