Los Cabos is the shortest route from the western US to a desert-meets-ocean resort coast — nonstops from 25-plus North American cities, 350 days of sun, and whales in the bay all winter.
How the secret got out
Steady US resort development since the 1990s, then a nonstop from nearly every major American hub. The marlin are still there; so is everyone else.

Getting to Los Cabos in practice
San José del Cabo (SJD) has nonstop service from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Denver, Phoenix, Chicago, Seattle, New York, and most of the western US and Canada — 2 to 5 hours from almost anywhere west of the Mississippi. The airport sits 20 minutes from San José del Cabo and 45 from Cabo San Lucas; pre-book a shuttle, as the arrivals hall is a timeshare gauntlet.
When to go
October through May is the season: dry, 25–30°C, and from January to March the bay fills with humpbacks and gray whales you can see from shore. August and September are hurricane season and genuinely hot. Sportfishing peaks in fall; the Pacific-side surf runs all summer.
Where to stay
Cabo San Lucas is the marina, the nightlife, and Medano Beach — the town's one reliably swimmable stretch. San José del Cabo is the quieter half: an old plaza, Thursday-night art walks, restaurants that outclass the resort strips. The Corridor between them is all-inclusive row, and Todos Santos, an hour up the Pacific, is the artsy escape hatch.
Worth knowing
Most Cabo beaches are not swimmable — currents, not rules; Medano, Chileno, and Santa Maria are the safe ones. The Arch boat trip is worth the $15 water taxi, no tour needed. Everything is priced in dollars but pesos settle 10–15% cheaper almost everywhere.
