Chiang Mai is Thailand at walking pace — 300 temples inside a moated old city, the country's best food scene per baht, and mountains at the end of every street. The one thing it asks of you is choosing the right months.

How the secret got out

Cheap living plus fast internet made it the first nomad hub (2013–2016); low-cost carriers from China and across Southeast Asia filled the airport. Smoke season does what the crowds can't.

Getting to Chiang Mai in practice

Chiang Mai (CNX) is 70 minutes from Bangkok with shuttle-frequency service on multiple airlines, plus regional nonstops from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Taipei, Seoul, and China. From anywhere farther, connect in Bangkok — both airports work, but Suvarnabhumi keeps you on one ticket.

When to go

November through early February is the golden window: cool mornings, clear skies, and Yi Peng — the lantern festival — in November. The season to avoid is burning season, roughly late February through April, when field fires across the north push air quality to genuinely unhealthy levels. The rainy months (June–October) are green, quiet, and fine for everything but trekking's muddiest weeks.

Where to stay

The Old City puts temples and night markets at your door; Nimman is the café-and-gallery quarter by the university; the Ping riverside holds the quiet boutique hotels. Santitham, between them, is where the value and the local food went.

Worth knowing

Ethical elephant visits mean sanctuaries without riding — book the reputable ones days ahead. Doi Suthep at sunrise beats the midday coach hour, and the Sunday Walking Street market swallows an entire evening. Songthaews (red trucks) are the shared taxi: flag, name your destination, pay ~30 baht.
