Machu Picchu is a logistics puzzle wrapped in a wonder: a flight to Cusco, a train down the Sacred Valley, a timed-entry ticket, and altitude to respect. Solve the pieces in the right order and the citadel at dawn is everything promised.
Why the world goes
A new wonder of the world and the most photographed ruin in the Americas; the train from Ollantaytambo and the first view from the Sun Gate are both worth the trip on their own.
What to know
Tickets are timed and capped at roughly 4,500 a day; buy weeks ahead in high season. Acclimatize in Cusco (3,400 m) for two days first.

Getting to Machu Picchu in practice
Fly Lima to Cusco (90 minutes, all-day frequency; Bogotá and Santiago also fly in nonstop). From Cusco, trains leave from Poroy or — better — Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley, reaching Aguas Calientes, the town below the ruins, in about 90 minutes. There is no road: it's the train, or the four-day Inca Trail with a permit booked months out.
When to go
May through September is the dry season and the crowd season — book entry tickets and trains weeks ahead. Shoulder months (April, October) trade some rain for space. February closes the Inca Trail for maintenance, though the site itself stays open; the wet-season mists either ruin your photos or make them, depending on luck.
Where to stay
Sleep in Aguas Calientes the night before so you're on the first buses at dawn. Acclimatize first, though — Cusco sits at 3,400 m; two days there (or better, in the lower Sacred Valley at Ollantaytambo or Urubamba) before the climb-heavy circuits saves most altitude misery.
Worth knowing
Entry is by timed ticket on fixed circuits, capped daily — the Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain climbs are separate, scarcer tickets. Bring your passport (it's checked, and stamped if you like). Guides are worth it on a first visit; water, snacks, and big bags are technically prohibited inside. The site is one-way — once you exit a circuit, there's no re-entry.
