Phuket is the easiest landing in the Thai islands — a real international airport with nonstops across Asia and the Gulf, beaches for every taste on one island, and ferries onward to the postcard bays when you're ready.

How the secret got out

Charter tourism from the 1980s, then The Beach (2000) sent the backpackers, then direct flights from Russia, China, Korea and Europe. Phi Phi's Maya Bay had to close for years to recover.

Getting to Phuket in practice

Phuket (HKT) has nonstops from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, Sydney, Doha, Dubai, and a long list of Chinese and Indian cities — plus the 80-minute Bangkok shuttle that runs all day. From Europe, Qatar and Emirates one-stops are usually fastest; from the US, plan on two legs however you slice it.

When to go

November through April is the dry season with flat, swimmable west-coast water. May through October is the southwest monsoon: green, cheap, and surfable, but red-flag rip currents on the west beaches are a real hazard, not a formality. Songkran (Thai New Year, mid-April) is a three-day national water fight worth planning into — or around.

Where to stay

Patong is the nightlife engine; Kata and Karon soften it for families; Bang Tao and Surin are the quiet, resort-lined north; Phuket Old Town — Sino-Portuguese shophouses, weekend night market — is the culture stay nobody expects. Rawai and Nai Harn, at the southern tip, keep the longest local feel.

Worth knowing

Use the metered-app taxis (Grab/Bolt); the airport 'limousine' counters and tuk-tuk cartel are the island's oldest tourist tax. Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay day trips sell everywhere — the early boats beat both the crowds and the afternoon chop. Rainy-season swimmers: the flags are law, and the lifeguards mean them.

Background

Phuket is one of the southern provinces (changwat) of Thailand. It consists of the island of Phuket, the country's largest island, and another 32 smaller islands off its coast. Phuket lies off the west coast of mainland Thailand in the Andaman Sea. Phuket Island is connected by the Sarasin Bridge to Phang Nga province to the north. The next nearest province is Krabi, to the east across Phang Nga Bay.
