Getting to Santorini in practice
In season (roughly April–October) Santorini (JTR) has nonstops from dozens of European cities — London, Paris, Rome, Vienna, and most capitals in between. Year-round, the route is through Athens: a 45-minute hop, or a 5–8 hour ferry from Piraeus that docks beneath the caldera wall. From North America it's always one stop, via Athens or any big European hub.
When to go
Late April to early June and September to mid-October give caldera weather without the July–August cruise crush, when up to five ships a day empty into Fira and Oia. Most caldera hotels close November through March; the island in winter is moody, cheap, and almost private, but check what's open before booking.
Where to stay
Oia is the sunset postcard and priced accordingly; Imerovigli has the same caldera at a saner rate and the best walking path on the island; Fira is central with the nightlife and the bus hub. Perissa and Kamari, on the flat east coast, trade the view for black-sand beaches and half the bill. Caldera rooms mean stairs — a lot of them — pack accordingly.
